Methodology

How we calculate

We use the generally accepted room-volume method that installers apply for domestic air conditioners.

  1. VolumeArea is multiplied by ceiling height.
  2. Heat loadVolume is multiplied by 30–45 W/m³ depending on orientation and by an insulation factor.
  3. People and appliancesWe add 0.1 kW per person, and for kitchens, living rooms and offices, the heat from appliances. Attic rooms get an allowance for the roof.
  4. HeatingWe calculate separately at 40 W/m³ with stricter insulation factors, without counting heat from people and appliances.
  5. ClassWe choose the smallest class of 9, 12, 18 or 24,000 BTU whose nominal capacity covers the requirement (1 kW ≈ 3,412 BTU/h).

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose a more powerful air conditioner “just in case”?

A slightly more powerful inverter air conditioner is not a problem, but an oversized unit runs in short cycles, dries out the air and costs more. It is better for the capacity to match the room.

Why does heating often require more capacity?

In winter the difference between indoor and outdoor temperature is greater, and in cold weather the air conditioner delivers less heat. That is why we calculate heating more conservatively and without counting heat from people and appliances.

What should I do if the room is over 80 m² or open plan?

For large or connected rooms it is sometimes better to use two units or a multi-split system. Call us and we will suggest a solution based on the layout.

How accurate is the result?

The calculator gives a guideline using a generally accepted method. The exact choice also depends on the installation location, windows, floor and neighbouring rooms – so if in doubt, call us.
